Chennai is known to people as the cultural capital of India. The city is an amalgamation of old Tamil culture, British leftovers, and modern high rise buildings. Although my city has been through some tough times in the last few years through political turmoils and environmental disasters, the warmth of people has never come down. The must-haves for visiting Chennai are water bottles, a language guide, sunscreen lotion, and an open mind for the people. Beaches, old temples, and crowded streets are awaiting you!

Chennai, in Southern India, is a place of cultural and traditional values with a conservative outlook in the society. Availability of resources for both traditional and modern type of living are seen across the city. The cost of living is average and people are helpful and friendly. The weather here is quite tropical, warm and humid. Restaurants are plenty serving multi-cuisine fare. In the form of entertainment, we have one of the largest beaches and many resorts for weekend getaways. There are many shopping malls and multiplex cinemas. Chennai has many good hospitals with modern healthcare facilities. To sum up, Chennai is a great place.

The city is famously quipped for having one of the hottest climates. Nonetheless, it is home to the second-longest beaches in the world, which is a respite. It is one of the cities which is still a little on the conservative side. The city is well-known for grand celebrations during its harvest festival- Pongal.

The first thing most people realize when they first step foot in Chennai is that the sun really, and we mean really, loves Chennai. In fact, the city is famously quipped to have only three seasons: Hot, hotter, and hottest! So if you’re expecting a sunny beach city along the lines of Goa, you’re bound to get more than what you bargained for. Nonetheless, Chennai also has great beaches, amazing food and a vibrant culture – all of which are best enjoyed after the sun has dived behind the horizon!

While the city has kept pace with development and has made great strides in recent decades, Chennai’s people are still considered to be a little on the conservative side. This can manifest in several ways and even some simple things such as smoking in public, particularly for women, or public displays of affection might attract unwanted attention. While there aren’t any cases where this mindset has led to violence or attacks, the atmosphere can be slightly restrictive if you come from a more liberal place.
