One defining word for Taipei is “convenience”! Public transport is convenient, access to nearby green hills is convenient, and yes, the amazing proliferation of convenience stores is well-known!

Taipei, Taiwan, is one the safest places one could visit or relocate to; it is very convenient and friendly. It is generally beautiful with high buildings and many shopping malls. However, the downside may be that the city is expensive and very busy compared to other cities in Taiwan.

It’s common knowledge that ice cream trucks play a catchy tune in North America, which incites nostalgia for long summer days and the freedom of childhood. In Taipei, when you hear one of Bach’s Concertos echoing down the street, don’t be surprised by the overwhelming smell of garbage instead of sweet summer treats. In Taiwan, garbage trucks play their tune to inform you of their arrival and unless you rush out in time, you will be left standing by the curb with your trash in hand. Be prepared, and do not bring your wallet or tastebuds to this communal, roadside event.

You need to know Chinese to get around the city. Most universities offer language programs that help foreigners learn Chinese. Regarding safety, the city is quite safe even at night but be careful of cars and motorcycles. The local food could take some getting used to. You can, however, find American food in the busier parts of the city.

If someone were moving to Taipei, I recommend that they spend an appropriate amount of time studying Chinese as this will help them immensely in their daily life while living here. Additionally, study the culture of the island to have a better chance of integrating and enjoying their time while they’re here. Thirdly, I would highly recommend them to be open to trying new, exotic foods.

If you want to move to Taipei, you should ideally be able to speak basic Mandarin, or at least be prepared to learn. If you’re coming from a colder climate, be aware that the temperature in the Summer can reach above 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees) Farenheit. Taipei also has a wonderful public transport system, so you won’t need to rent a car.
