Raleigh is a medium-sized city that serves as the capital of North Carolina. The area abounds with parks and outdoor recreational opportunities. The city and its surrounding area is home to several institutes of higher education, which provide various academic and cultural events throughout the year. The International Bluegrass Music Association holds their annual conference and festival in Raleigh, bringing thousands of music lovers together for several days of banjo-picking, fiddling and foot-stomping.

Raleigh is the City of Oaks for its many white oak trees planted throughout the community ages ago. Many of the trees are in small parks that dot the city’s downtown, offering green space to urban residents and visitors. A city ordinance protects the trees with restrictions on pruning and cutting.
