If you’re new to Kochi or are moving here. Here are some things you need to keep in mind:
1. It rains a lot here, so always remember to carry an umbrella with yourself whenever leaving the house.
2. If you’re a non-Keralite you might face some language issues. It’s always safe to talk in English with the locals instead of Hindi as they might misinterpret you.
3. Most people in Kerala are non-vegetarians and even eat beef, so if you’re an orthodox Hindu your preference should be to eat only at pure vegetarian restaurants.
4. Protests or ‘hartals’ as the locals call it are really a common sight here.
5. If you’re not a south Indian, I’d suggest you to better learn to wear a dhoti as a lot of temples here don’t allow entry of men if you’re not wearing one.
6. Never ever take a KSRTC bus as the drivers of these are really famous for fast and reckless driving instead take a metro or call an Uber.
Know to speak Malayalam or at least English fluently. If the place he/she’s looking for, is outside the main city area then knowing about the transportation facilities would be better. It’s important to carry an umbrella with you always. Kochi’s a nice tourist place and not to mention, comfortable with all the facilities.
If you are moving to Cochin you must know that we are a historically rich city with beautiful bodies of water and lush greenery. Some of the must visit places include Fort Cochin, Bolgatty Island, and Mattanchey. Also, it’s mostly about the fish so don’t miss the red fish curry. The people here are some of the friendliest, also you won’t have a problem with language because most of us can speak more than one language. But beware of the mosquitoes.
Kochi, my city is an upcoming city in Kerala, India. Even though, most people know to speak English and Hindi, it is always an additional advantage to know local language, Malayalam. Next step, to take is to get a geographic idea of the city, so you don’t get into difficulty to move around and to get essentials. People as such are quite friendly. People who have come here from other cities have made this their home.
