Does Portland have a downtown? Is it vibrant? Is it safe? Here's what three local experts had to say about downtown in Portland, Maine.

In Portland, you’ll find freshly-caught lobster and a busy downtown with many faces and names. You may focus on the many local businesses from the smaller to the larger estates, but be sure not to miss the many stories in the souls of those passing by. You’ll find great-tasting food and articulate style in Portland. From the forest trails to The Atlantic Ocean, Portland is a Beautiful city on the coast of vacationland state of Maine, USA.

HELPFUL REPORT

Portland sits right on the harbor and the ocean surrounds the sides of the downtown peninsula. You can see the ocean, smell the sea salt and you can count on that crisp ocean breeze on hot summer days. The colder months, which are most of the year, still offer much beauty. You can sit on top of the Eastern Prom in a snowstorm with a hot drink in a thermos, watching the boats on the ocean as the sun starts to go down. Part of what makes Portland such an amazing place to live is how close nature is to the city. It’s a 10-20-minute drive to a hike, lake or nature preserve. Much of Maine culture is about getting outside and taking advantage of the landscape.

The footprint of the city is somewhat small with the downtown being a mile-wide peninsula, so spending the day walking downtown is easy. If it’s Friday night in Portland and you decide you’d like to get takeout or go for a fancy sit-down dinner, the options are seemingly endless and somehow the quality is far from compromised. Izakaya Minato is a Japanese fusion style bistro. A block away is Cong Tu Bot which has some of the best pho you can imagine. One more block away is Forage Market, which makes their own bagels and uses local ingredients for sandwiches.
