Montego Bay, the second largest city in Jamaica, is famous for its beautiful beaches, warm weather, and spicy jerk chicken. Roughly two million tourists from all over the world travel hours by flight or cruise to visit the area yearly. The Jamaican culture attracts foreigners who want to relax, listen to some live Reggae music, and embrace the slow paced lifestyle. If time is of the essence, this country is not the place. Additionally, it must be noted that compared with other popular destinations for Caribbean travel, the country as a whole is significantly more expensive. Housing, electricity, and food are some examples of necessities that are pricey in Jamaica.

Montego Bay offers colonial architecture, famously delicious food, and wonderful weather most of the year. While it is paradise, it’s important to note that although homosexuality isn’t prohibited in Montego Bay, the local culture is not particularly accepting and LGBT violence is not unheard of. The city also has issues with gangs and organised violence related to the drug trade, but this rarely affects the expat areas of the island and living in Montego Bay is not normally affected by these types of crime.

Montego Bay is known for its engaging nightlife, jerked chicken, beautiful beaches and friendly people. While all this fun is enticing, prepare for annoying traffic, summer heat and sandflies if you visit the beach to view the sunset. You should also plan to do home exercises or to join a gym; the tasty food can easily get the better of you.

Montego Bay is very fast-paced, but the locals are friendly. Traffic is really bad in the mornings and evening especially when school is in session. It’s mostly sunny all the time except from September to December when it’s hurricane season. There are also lots of jobs in the tourism field as Montego Bay is the tourist capital of Jamaica.
