Once called “Slummerville,” Somerville is now a highly regarded community that makes up part of the Boston Metro Area. Public transportation is a mixed bag. You’ll want to be as close as possible to the Red Line so you can easily zip to Kendall Square in Cambridge or into the heart of Boston (Park Street). If you’re heading to Somerville, check out Brooklyn Boulders (huge climbing gym) and Dali (amazing Tapas place).
Somerville is close to many Red Line T stops and has pretty decent bus coverage. The Green Line is expanding outward into Somerville, which is great for commuting, especially downtown, but also means the rent prices are going up. Otherwise, Somerville has a bunch of very cute squares near the T stops, including Davis Square, which is my personal favorite.
