Newport News is one of the seven independent cities which make up the metropolitan area known as Hampton Roads, which is in southeastern Virginia. Along with York County (which is not considered part of Hampton Roads) and the neighboring city of Hampton, Newport News is between the York and James Rivers on what is commonly referred to as the Peninsula. The remaining five cities of Hampton Roads- Norfolk, Chesapeake, Suffolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach- are accessed through either of three crossings: the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel, the Monitor-Merrimac Bridge-Tunnel, or the James River Bridge, the latter of which features a drawbridge rather than a tunnel with which to allow large ships to travel up and down the river.
Newport News is a diverse and ever-changing city. There are several large employers in the area that consistently seek employees. We are also known as a military city. We have great parks and we are close to Busch Gardens and Virginia Beach without all the busy traffic that those cities have daily.
