Tips for Moving and Visiting

Hastings-on-Hudson, which locals refer to as just “Hastings”, is a town of around 7,000 people, about 12 miles north of New York City. Many people who live here commute into NYC, although there are also locals who live *and* work here. I think this is rare though, as the town is quite expensive to live in if you are new to the area (i.e. you didn’t inherit your family’s home). I like to describe the town as “campy”. There is one elementary school, and the middle and high school are actually housed in the same complex, although kept at opposite ends. Many families move here to raise their children. One complaint is that once the children have gone off to college or wherever, people move. This is partly because the taxes are very high here. The town has a few eating options. There are two pizza parlors, a popular Japanese food place, and a few bars that also serve food. There are more restaurants and businesses in general in neighboring Dobbs Ferry. Hastings is relatively quiet at night. It is not a college town. The town tries to meet the needs of all of its residents, including seniors. From my perspective the town is relatively close-knit. People are friendly and dependable.
