Somerset is a mix of rural and suburban (with a couple areas for industry and offices). It’s close to Rutgers in New Brunswick — not enough to walk, but close enough to make it a trivial drive. Unfortunately, it also has some of the highest property taxes in all the United States — but those taxes pay for good municipal services and some of the best schools in New Jersey.

Somerset is one of several towns within Franklin Township, a diverse municipality within Somerset County in New Jersey. The school system may not have outstanding test scores, but the teachers there impart life lessons upon students that normally are not taught in the classroom. Somerset is conveniently near New Brunswick, a small city that is home to one of the oldest universities in the country, Rutgers University. There also is easy access to mass transit, which you can take for an hour or so to get to the Jersey Shore, New York City, or Philadelphia.
