Moving to the city of Debrecen was incredibly a unique choice for most international students studying in Hungary. One would choose Budapest as the top choice due to its vibrant lifestyle, and eye-catching sights. However, Debrecen, as the second largest city in Hungary, should not be overlooked. It is very ideal for students as it has a bit more of a relaxed lifestyle compared to the country’s capital of Budapest, which is very well alive into the late hours of the night. One could easily stroll around or ride the public transport without much traffic interference or troubles. To add on to this, residents could easily travel to the capital with only one train ride. Given this, it is a very ideal location for students looking for a better study environment.

Commuting is not the easiest in this city, but you can make it work if you are smart enough. Check out the Big Forest, it is heavenly. You can stroll around and get some drinks or snacks. You may consider to visit the Aquaticum as the wellness is amazing.

The city is not quite huge, and getting around is considerably easy. I recommend getting a transport pass, which is extremely cheap for the value it provides as it lets you use all the buses and trams while costing less than 10 USD a month. As far as accommodation is concerned I recommend going for a 2-3 bedroom apartment, as you can easily find students willing to share the apartment with you, which would make it considerably cheaper.

Instead of spending money on using public transport, invest in a bicycle. It will help run down transport over time like you will not believe. If you plan on getting an apartment, look for one with three or four bedrooms and try and find others to live with you. It is much cheaper than getting a single or double bedroom apartment just for yourself.
