Milton Keynes is a ‘New Town’ founded to accommodate population over-spill from ever-expanding London. It is characterised by a highly regular, segregated network of roads and cycle paths and is particularly famous for its many roundabouts. As a result, the town has a reputation for being devoid of character and somewhat soulless. However, the modern town incorporated numerous existing towns and villages, which still preserve the area’s rural history in their architecture, and ‘the city’, as locals term it, contains many picturesque parks and lakes which attest to the planner’s ambition to create a ‘city in the forest’.

Milton Keynes is famed for having the most roundabouts of any European city, and you will experience this as you drive along the roads as you first arrive. The city is also a perfect blend of concrete and greenery, with many parks where one can spend their days wandering and exploring. One will rarely get lost, as the architects got their inspiration from the layout of New York, and designed the city to be laid out in a grid system. Milton Keynes is only 50 miles from central London, making it perfect for anyone who needs to commute to the capital for work, with trains running between the cities on a routine basis.
