It is a coastal city with a tropical climate year-round. Many religious and civic celebrations, including one of the most famous street carnivals in the world. The city was founded with the purpose of administering the colony and defending its territory against European invaders. Salvador remained the capital of Brazil until 1759 when the capital was transferred to Rio de Janeiro.
