The first thing anyone should know before moving to Buffalo is that the winters are cold and long. However, the city is also home to many historic buildings and entertainment venues. There are many good bars and restaurants, and breweries are especially popular. Toronto is only an hour and a half north of Buffalo, and other major cities are also nearby.

Buffalo is a small city with sprawling, highly-populated suburbs which are the result of the movement of families away from the city center thanks to the greater ease of commuting afforded by advances in infrastructure and automobile technology in the middle of the 1900s. It can get quite cold in the city in winter, with temperatures below zero degrees Fahrenheit not at all uncommon. In contrast to the bitter weather are the warm-hearted people of the city and the hearty cuisine, both sufficient to make one who has left his or her family in Buffalo homesick and the traveler nostalgic about his time spent there.

Buffalo is known for its harsh winters, and many people wonder why we live here. We live here because of the food and the people. Beef on weck, Buffalo wings (simply called “chicken wings” here), and craft beer are among the best known offerings. However, there are also numerous gourmet options and family-owned restaurants. In the “City of Good Neighbors,” you’re likely to make a friend or two when you go out to eat.
