Buffalo, NY remains one of the underestimated jewels of the Northeast, offering myriad cultural and recreational opportunities for the quotidian traveler. Despite its reputation as a decadent “Rust Belt” city, Buffalo has worked had to renovate its waterfront in recent years, restoring its once-decrepit waterfront district into a luxurious lakeside oasis Canalside. Tourists flock in droves to Canalside in summer for kayaking, concerts, and even zip-lining between historic grain elevators; Canalside continues to be popular in winter, including such unique festivities as ice biking, ice fishing, and “polar-bear plunges” into the near-frozen Lake Erie for charitable causes. Buffalo offers far greater recreational activities than one would realize at a cursory glance.

Buffalo is a surprising gem of a Rust Belt city, on the shores of Lake Erie. Revitalized in recent years by an influx of refugees, Buffalo has a bustling food scene. Downtown also has a newly redesigned Theater District, complete with an above-ground train that shuttles residents from downtown to the waterfront. During summer, Canalside is the place to enjoy waterfront concerts and festivals.
