Basingstoke has most of the high-street brands you may hope to live near, so you will not have to travel elsewhere to find all of your Christmas presents. However, if you prefer to support independent or family-run stores, Basingstoke does not have many options when compared with other towns. The town centre is very close to the War Memorial Park, which has a playground, an aviary and plenty of open space for children to burn off excess energy after a day at the shops.

Basingstoke is a large town from where Burberry coats and Thornycroft Vehicles originate. The small older area in the centre contains St Michael’s Church and park with attractive almshouses and the Haymarket Theatre, and the newer sprawling conurbations have expanded out to ring roads, roundabouts, a shopping centre and leisure park. The source of the Basingstoke canal begins here and the River Loddon provide natural beauty.
