If one moves to Evanston, Illinois, or to the greater Chicago area, our weather is surprisingly bearable. I have spent four winters in New England, and have found the difference in average winter temperatures to be negligible—the same coat, scarf, and hat that I wear in Connecticut in January is perfectly suitable in Chicago at the same time of year. The colloquial nickname, “The Windy City,” refers to the city’s political history, as opposed to the literal weather. The stereotypes surrounding Chicago weather are inaccurate, and should not scare any potential newcomer away.
