Be prepared for high humidity! The green and fertile farmlands are amazing and are reminiscent of the old days. It’s common to see farm stands by the side of the road. Healthy cow herds and horses dot the pastures on the outskirts of the city. Some people also choose peacocks to monitor their yards for pest control.

On March 1, 2007, Enterprise was struck by a devastating EF4 tornado, which trekked a destructive path through the heart of the city and its beloved high school, resulting in the death of 8 students and 1 local resident. The natural disaster made national news and created unparalleled scenes of havoc. Although tragic, such an event brought out the sincerest hospitality and goodwill of everyone in the community, who rebuilt the ravaged buildings, helped those affected to get back on their feet. The undoubtedly shaped what the city is today and effectively catalyzed its adoption of the city motto as the “city of progress.”

While the boll weevil infestation and the Enterprise tornado don’t singlehandedly define Enterprise, they laid much of the foundation for our city’s unmatched work ethic and progressiveness that underlies the “city of progress” motto. There is always something new being built. Whether it’s new restaurants, new homes, or new green spaces, one thing that rings true is the commitment to progress and becoming a better city. More than just adding to the city, the motto inspires individuals to become better people each day as well through service, leadership, and character.
