Ripon is a very community-based town. The local grocery store (Webster’s) donates thousands of dollars every year towards community events and scholarships. The local Rotary and Kiwanis clubs run every size and shape of event geared towards community involvement. The city board orchestrates all manner of community events, from movies and live music at the Village Green to the popular city-wide garage sale.
One of the largest events Ripon offers each year is the “Dickens of a Christmas” celebration on the main drag. Thousands of people wander through the local shops and eateries in order to celebrate the upcoming holiday season. The largest draw is the living windows. School-age children act in the living windows, dressing up as a variety of Dickens’ characters and being rewarded with hot cocoa and cookies after their shifts end. There are also carolers, live music, and the Ripon High School band traveling up and down the stretch of Watson Street during the festivities.
