Is Durham diverse? Do people from different ethnic groups get along? Here's what four local experts had to say about diversity, inclusivity, and racism in Durham, North Carolina.

Durham is in central North Carolina. It’s a thriving, diverse city with wonderful museums, restaurants, and colleges, including Duke and North Carolina Central University, and the Research Triangle Park area, which is full of scientific and medical research facilities. However, my personal favorite part of Durham is the Durham Performing Arts Center (DPAC), which features touring Broadway shows and concerts, spoken word events, and stand-up comedy tours.

HELPFUL REPORT

Those who have not spent a great deal of time in Durham may view it as a run-down, dangerous city. However, that perception is nothing but an exaggerated stereotype of what Durham used to be. Someone moving to Durham today would find beautiful new high-rises, significant race and economic diversity, low crime rates, and opportunity. Durham is very large, comprising multiple sections that look as if they couldn’t possible be part of the same city; any type of environment one may search for is very likely to be found in this city.

Durham is a sprawling and constantly growing metropolis in the heart of the famous Research Triangle area of North Carolina. Its primary attractions are its diversity and geographic enticements. The Research Triangle draws people from all over the world, and the wide range of culture make the city interesting and exciting. The geography of this part of the world includes short trips to gorgeous mountains, lakes and rivers, and world-renowned beaches.

While Durham, North Carolina, is a large city, visitors can expect a close-knit, hometown feel when exploring the area. Durham, also known as Bull City, is full of unique independent businesses that create a diverse community. One can expect to find a plethora of activities while visiting, as well. Durham is home to Duke University which houses the Sarah P. Duke Gardens, and Nasher Art Museum, both of which exhibit the beauty and unique culture of Durham.
