Highwood is a lovely town, down-to-earth and charming. The majority of its residents are Latino and some speak only Spanish. Summer evenings are filled with the sounds of laughter and mariachi. Walk down a few streets and you’ll probably be invited to join in on someone’s backyard barbecue. On winter mornings, trucks idle outside apartment buildings, waiting for carpool members to fill the cab. Their employer’s names grace the sides of their vehicles: landscapers, bricklayers, painters, and the like. Their smiles gleam white from under black moustaches; their breath joins the morning fog. Highwood is full of people who love their daily routines, who know how to barbecue, and who will take their mariachi however they can get it.
