Rethymno is a small, seaside town with intense nightlife during summer. The locals are hospitable and rely heavily on tourism. There are many reckless drivers though, so remember that especially if you are a pedestrian. The whole region is beautiful with palm trees and beaches on each side of the island.
Rethymno is the third largest town on Crete. It was built in the Venetian period and has a fortress overlooking the harbor. Boat trips and cruises depart daily from the port. Along the palm-lined seafront, you will find many tavernas and restaurants for your enjoyment. Beyond the Port and Marina area, a long sandy beach stretches for 20 kilometres to the east.
