Midlothian, Virginia, fits snugly in between Powhatan County to the west, the James River and Henrico County’s West End to the north, and the neighboring district of Bon Air to the east. As a town in Virginia, Midlothian experiences a mishmash of elements from the Deep South and the Mid-Atlantic, only compounded by its location central to the Commonwealth of Virginia. The climate is temperate. Cool winters with occasional snow, wet falls, muggy and mosquito-overrun summers, and pleasant although pollinated springs.

Midlothian was the inspiration for the town in the 2001 cult classic move Donnie Darko. Midlothian is one of the few places in the country that’s within a few hour’s drive from both the mountains and the beach. The James River is just a ten-minute drive from my home. The mountains are the Appalachians. There’s no skiing to be had there, but camping there is quite pleasant. Just don’t leave the bug spray at home. Aside from the places around Midlothian, there are quite a few places to check out within it as well.

Midlothian is a suburb of the city of Richmond, Virginia, in Chesterfield County. Our area offers plenty of opportunities in the way of shopping, dining out, and outdoor adventures.

Midlothian is very similar to other developed areas nearby, namely Short Pump. However, not only is it less expensive to live there, it is also not as populated or congested. The drive to Richmond, our closest city, is still the same. However, it feels much quieter. The tree lined neighborhoods allow for a feeling of isolation while still being in close proximity to all the amenities one might wish for in suburbia.

Midlothian Mines Park not only serves as a nice place to go for a picnic, but also hosts ruins of coal mines, serving as reminders of our country’s formative years. Midlothian Apothecary is a local favorite. Although it is foremost a pharmacy, Midlothian Apothecary is one of the few remaining soda fountains in the commonwealth, providing great food and great service, all at a great price. In recent years, there has been a resurgence of Mom and Pop stores in the area, although almost all of them are restaurants: El Cerro Azul, Capital Ale House, Brick House Diner, and Great Harvest Bakery.
