Although the cost of living is high, there is a lot that cause people to live in Burnaby. There is the option of going up mountains to hike, ski, or snowboard, and there is the option of going to the ocean or lakes to spend your time there. There are not many places that you can go from mountains to water within a 10-minute drive from the city.
