Younger kids can go biking around and to the trails or the swimming pool. Riverside Park has a bunch to do. There are two parks there plus four baseball and softball fields, a track, a swimming pool, a river over the dike, sand volleyball, and the trails run along the park too. In the summer time they have a rodeo and it includes 40 and over calf roping, bareback bronc riding, bull riding, calf roping, mutton bustin, steer wrestling and much more.

In the summer they used to have the Mad Bomber Run For Your Life which was based on Charley Melvin, a prohibitionist who bombed three saloons in 1905 in Iola. This event ended in 2016 but it used to be the biggest event in Southeast Kansas and it would bring in many many people from the midwest. It was one of the biggest events in southeast Kansas, also had a carnival for the kids, old time games, and a drag race for members that wanted to join. After all of that was over the 5K run and 3K walk would start at midnight.

Iola, Kansas, is in the middle of nowhere and it is a small town. Everyone knows everyone and you can make friends with everyone. There is a movie theater so you can go and watch a movie if you want. The town has a frisbee golf course and walking trails of 2.25 miles of wide gravel and then 9 miles of natural hiking, biking, and running trails on the banks of Elm Creek. If you decide to not drive around and want to be in nature then you can walk the trails. You can go hunting right outside Iola and fishing in elks lake, Elm Creek, and many other rivers that are outside of Iola.
