Sturgis is very friendly to everyone, especially tourists. (After all their entire economy is built on tourism). However, if you want to actually live there, be prepared to never speak an opinion of anything they do. You will be labeled an outsider and basically told to shut your mouth. Opinions by out of staters are NOT welcomed, and there is great animosity towards local politicians; they’re either loved or hated, no in between.
The good ol’ boy mentality is strong, so just accept everything exactly as it is, even the stupid stuff, because it will never change.

Sturgis has a lot of school spirit. Everyone goes to the high school football games and it has often gotten praise for how many student fans there are, even at away games. After every football game that Sturgis wins, the whole student section rushes onto the football field, huddles with the players, does “Scooper jacks”, and then cheers and rushes together again. At one point the football team had a record for the most losing games in a row and was even featured on ESPN for this. During the last few years the football team improved and even made it to playoffs for the first time in at least 20 years.

Every year there is a motorcycle rally. Every year upwards of tens to hundreds of thousands of people come to Sturgis from all over the world. What very few people know is that everyone who lives in Sturgis hates the rally. People invade the town, trash it, and then leave, only spending money on the rally shops. Sturgis will never get out of hosting the Rally because it brings in 10% of the state’s overall budget.

Sturgis, South Dakota, has a population of about 6,000 people. The town has a bigger ‘A’ school or one of the smallest ‘AA’ schools in the state. Most of the stores in the town are t-shirt shops, coffee places, gas stations, and fast food restaurants. Overall it is not a very exceptional town.
