Safford, in Southeastern Arizona, has a warm climate, with mild winters and hot summers. With a population of less than 20,000, Safford is in the valley of the Gila River at about 3,000 feet elevation. Although it is a relatively small city, it serves a large area of southeastern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico as a place to shop and receive medical and other services. In nearby Thatcher is Eastern Arizona College, a community college which cooperates with Northern Arizona University on some programs.
