Roanoke Rapids, while a lovely and quaint town near the popular Lake Gaston, is also infamously known for its pungent smell. Originally built as a mill town, the city of Roanoke Rapids has a paper mill at its center, the cause of a distinct waste odor. Once within city limits, the odor becomes nearly unbearable, but residents are very much used to it, especially on rainy days. One can only imagine the homecoming I receive during the holidays.
