The city of Portmore in St. Catherine, Jamaica, is one of the most desired areas to live in for many persons who work in the Corporate Area. This is because the cost of living is relatively affordable and as well it is within close proximity to Kingston and St. Andrew.

The municipality of Portmore is a large and continually-expanding urban center within the parish of St. Catherine, which neighbors the parishes of Kingston and St. Andrew where the capital of Kingston is found. However, much to the chagrin of many of its residents, it is technically not designated as one of Jamaica’s cities. It may, however, be on track to one day achieving ‘city’ status due to the increasing levels of development; and many of the features one would expect a city to have are already present, or expected to soon appear In Portmore.

Portmore is known as the “Sunshine City” of Jamaica. It seldom rains and it is humid year-round. Portmore is home to 1,000s of working-class citizens who commute to the corporate area of Kingston and Saint Andrew daily. As a result of this, traffic congestion and long toll lines are the order of the day.

Anyone considering living in my city would need to be aware of traffic jams, so patience is a must. Traffic congestion is a regular occurrence in Portmore. The toll, especially, is where traffic build-up happens during the working days of Mondays to Fridays. But on a positive note, we do have family entertainment. The Gaming arcades, beaches, and go-karting will be an exciting experience.

Portmore is well-known for its diversity especially since it is a fairly small town. One can go to the Portmore mall and see people of literally all races going about their business speaking the strong patois. The people the my city sees no one as different. As a part of its heritage, the Jamaican national motto is ‘Out of Many One People’ based on the population’s multiracial roots.

Portmore is hot and beautiful. Is a little noisy but people look out for each other. It has a lot of open spaces for fresh air and a bit of dust whenever rain does not fall. It has lots of places to have fun (e.g., horse racing, the beach, car racing).

Portmore is large in size and culture. It is one of the most populated cities in my country, however, that doesn’t seem to be deterring anyone from moving here. We have been impactful, locally, in culture and music, specifically. One such artiste from my city that has influenced our music is Vybz Kartel.

Portmore is very populated due to it attraction to shopping malls, Food courts and entertainment. Upon moving to this city you should consider the system and the rout that each transportation travels to prevent being lost. After familiarizing yourself with the bus route system then you’ll be able to easily maneuver through day to day activities.

Portmore is known to have strong oncurring winds nearing the hurricane season. The city will forever be known for the best Kentucky Fried Chicken division due to the fact that they serve the best Barbecue chicken in the land. In Portmore you can walk to any corner and see someone cooking Jerk chicken on a grill or making soup called “Mannish Water,” which is a goat soup in Jamaican cuisine that is made from various goat parts.

If a person moves here, know people from here mainly commute to the Jamaican capital city for their jobs. It is important to note that majority of the population has to physically be present at work/in office: few work from their houses.
