Pescara in the province of Abruzzo in central Italy, was heavily bombed during WW2. As a result the city was rebuilt and is therefore fairly modern with relatively few ancient houses and buildings. Pescara has a population of about 100,000 and is located on the Adriatic coast. It has an international airport and is only 2.5 hours by plane from the UK.
