The most important thing a prospective resident must consider before moving to Oulu is that a knowledge of the local language (Finnish) is required, at least at a basic level. One may be able to get by with English in formal situations and when dealing with local authorities, but for social life and normal living, Finnish is essential. In addition to the language requirement, an open-mindedness to Finnish culture is of paramount importance.

Oulu is a city of around 100,000 residents, located almost exactly in the middle of Finland. I have often said to people considering visiting Oulu that it is not ideal for holidays due to a lack of leisure activities and tourist attractions. However, its clean environment and excellent schools make it a wonderful place for raising a family.
