It’s a small, quiet town in the karoo, about 400km (250 miles) east of Cape Town. Also known as the “Ostrich capital of the world”. There is much to do and see besides the ostrich and it’s greener (vegetation) than you might expect. We moved here as it’s quiet, small, hardly any traffic, friendly people and it’s a beautiful part of the country.
Although Oudtshoorn is a very small town, it is great for raising a family. As a teenager, I was often bored and complained about the town a lot; but, upon reflection, I am grateful to have grown up in such a safe town. My town is well known for its large Ostrich export and thus we have a booming tourism industry.
