Large parts of the town are built on a steep slope thus, at times, making travelling unpowered an energetic pursuit! The town is famous for making snuff and Kendal Mint Cake – both of which accompanied Messrs Hillary and Tenzing on the first successful ascent of Mount Everest. The river Kent, which flows through the town, is believed to be among the fastest rising and falling rivers in England.
