It is a granite city, which on dusky, cold days, often gives the city a sense of sullen posterity. This can be quite bleak, but when the sun shines, the unorthodox choice of architecture makes the place shine in a vivid, occasionally ornate way that few cities in Scotland can manage. It has small niches of culture, with Belmont Street tucked away and full of distinct bars and cafes. Job opportunities, I must confess, are for the single minded, as they mostly revolve around the well-paying but unreliable and creatively stunted oil economy.
