Bishop Auckland is a beautiful, historic town which was once home to the Prince Bishops. Bishop Castle still stands and is perfect for a day out with adjoining grounds and deer shelter. Stan Laurel of Laurel and Hardy fame was schooled here. One of the most recent additions is the open air Kynren experience which displays life in Britain over many historic eras.
Durham City is a historic place with beautiful architecture and a great cathedral. It is built on seven hills, which can be quite steep, and the River Wear flows through the city and there are some enchanting walks along its banks. Durham University is one of the oldest in England and the student population add to the vibrance of the city.
